Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is in your gut, not your head

Research by Cornell University in America has identified consistent differences in gut bacteria and inflammatory markers in the blood of people with chronic fatigue syndrome compared to those without the syndrome. This gives weight to the idea that CFS is really not in your head after all, but in your body. The study looked at 48 CFS sufferers and 39 healthy controls. There was less diversity of gut bacteria and also less of the bacteria known to have an anti-inflammatory effect in the CFS sufferers. At the same time, the researchers discovered specific markers of inflammation in the blood - thought to be due to a ‘leaky gut’ from intestinal problems that allows intestinal bacteria to get into the blood. This will trigger a heightened immune...

10 Ways to Do Just a Little More Exercise

We are often told that to feel good and keep healthy, we need to do more exercise but in January the gyms are full of well-intentioned people who go for one or two weeks then give up. (Even when they’ve paid for a year’s membership!).  Somehow life just seems to take over and other priorities intervene.  Here are ten ways to make sure you are doing just a little more, no matter what your current level of fitness: Use the facilities at home!  Go up and down the stairs twice instead of once whenever you need to.  You could try arm curls with a can of tomatoes whilst watching your favourite TV show Get up 20 minutes earlier in the morning to walk, run or...

“All matter has energy” – Einstein

Kinesiology is based on the principle that muscles, organs and glands are connected by a network of energetic channels that are often referred to as meridians. Emotional or physical stress can disrupt this natural flow of energy and disease is said to result when these pathways become imbalanced.  A wide range of powerful techniques, acupressure massage and nutritional recommendations help guide you back to optimum health. “But where’s the proof?” I hear you say! A 2005 study revealed the meridian channels when exposed to a particular form of light. A number of other studies since then have explored this new knowledge further – although of course, to the Chinese, this isn’t new knowledge at all as work on the meridians (acupuncture, acupressure or others) has been the main...

Food Intolerance Testing using Kinesiology

First of all, what is Kinesiology? Kinesiology is a non intrusive means to help detect food intolerances and other imbalances in the body. It works on the same energy meridians as acupuncture. It does not aim to replace medical diagnosis and treatment. If you think you may have a food allergy please see your doctor. What is the difference between food allergies and intolerances? Food Allergy A food allergy is a severe reaction which occurs within 3 hours of eating a culprit food. This type of immune response involves the IgE antibody and a histamine response. Symptoms can appear as hives, rashes, sneezing, or shortness of breath or other symptoms. Some IgE allergies can result in an "anaphylactic" reaction, which can be potentially fatal. Please consult your doctor if...

Getting Back your Zest4Life!

Are you burned out, stressed out, exhausted and overweight? Have you tried dieting before, but somehow the weight always seems to come back again? I work with people who are fed up with being over-weight and who would love to look in the mirror and love what they see. Some of these people know the clock is ticking and they must do something different after a diagnosis of type II diabetes or pre-diabetes from their doctor – especially after the shock of seeing the recent Panorama programme on ‘Diabetes: the hidden killer’ showing graphic images of amputations and other serious complications, all as a result of type 2 Diabetes. When I came across Patrick Holford’s Zest4Life approach to weightloss and health, I was immediately struck by the common...

Do Diets Like the 5:2 Work?

There is always some new diet or other in the news and when you know something needs to change, it’s easy to hop onto the latest one. The so-called 5:2 diet has been gaining popularity: this is 5 days of normal eating and 2 days of extreme calorie-restriction. There is some scientific basis to this because during limited starvation, the gut has time to repair and heal when it is not being bombarded with food. However, we are actually experiencing fasting every night and without too much difficulty, we can usually extend this period from say, 7pm after the last meal of the day until a late-ish breakfast at 10am. (But note – that doesn’t mean skip breakfast either, it means eat the right breakfast so you...

How can EFT help me?

EFT tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique)  is a non-invasive energy therapy based on the traditions of Chinese acupuncture and the idea that energy in the body is organised around certain channels called meridians. In 1980, a clinical psychologist called Roger Callaghan had a client, Mary, who had a terrible water phobia. She was so afraid of water that getting into a bath would bring on an anxiety attack. She had nightmares about water, and she was even afraid of rain. Callaghan tried all the conventional techniques but nothing worked. She felt fear in her stomach whenever she thought about water. As an experiment, Callaghan used his knowledge of meridians by EFT tapping on her stomach – he thought it might help the discomfort, but to his amazement,...

The Eyes are the Windows to Your Soul

More appropriately, that should be: ‘the iris is the window to your soul’!    From earliest times, the eyes have been used to tell us more about their owners:  The Chinese found certain health tendencies from the size, shape and set of the eyes; in the Ayurvedic tradition, eye colour is part of a person’s constitution.  Even as far back as ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, there are pictures pointing to the iris with what looks like a magnifying device.  The iris is the coloured part of your eye and can tell a skilled practitioner a lot about your health.  It is a diagnostic tool that many naturopaths and iridologists use, in addition to other methods, when delving deeper into the causes of your health problems. So what...
