EFT tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a non-invasive energy therapy based on the traditions of Chinese acupuncture and the idea that energy in the body is organised around certain channels called meridians.
In 1980, a clinical psychologist called Roger Callaghan had a client, Mary, who had a terrible water phobia. She was so afraid of water that getting into a bath would bring on an anxiety attack. She had nightmares about water, and she was even afraid of rain. Callaghan tried all the conventional techniques but nothing worked. She felt fear in her stomach whenever she thought about water. As an experiment, Callaghan used his knowledge of meridians by EFT tapping on her stomach – he thought it might help the discomfort, but to his amazement, she suddenly said her phobia had disappeared. She began enthusiastically running towards the swimming pool, but he had to stop her because he knew she couldn’t swim!
EFT taps into your subconscious to get to negative thought patterns you often don’t even realise are there. These can sometimes sabotage you in unexpected ways – whether it’s directly related to the problem or even several steps removed. First of all, I teach you some EFT techniques and we practise them together until you feel confident that you can do it on your own. I also give you a little reminder card that shows the EFT tapping points, which you can keep in your purse or wallet so that you’re never left hunting for a handout or notes you might have used a few months previously! We go at a comfortable pace and talk through any questions you may have about what words to use (your own are best), how to really get to the heart of the problem, how to tackle big problems, performance problems (whether that’s exams, a big presentation at work, a musical performance), whether you should be concentrating on positive things or negative things, and of course anything else that you specifically want to address. My aim is to make you ‘self-sufficient’, so that you are skilled enough to use EFT whenever the occasion demands it without having to book a therapist appointment.
