Allergy or Intolerance? Are they different?
Yes. A food allergy is a severe reaction that occurs within 3 hours of eating. Your doctor will carry out a blood test to look for specific antibodies to identify a food allergy.
Food intolerances are adverse reactions that are often more subtle than an allergy. They may result in symptoms as diverse as bloating and stomach cramps, ‘glue ear’ and sinus problems. Symptoms may occur any time up to 72 hours after eating the ‘offending’ food. Common examples are gluten, dairy, additives such as monosodium glutamate, or ‘families’ of foods such as the nightshade family (very much implicated in pain conditions).
Kinesiology can pinpoint the culprit very quickly and easily. The results are immediate and the test is pain-free. There is no need to remove any clothing, and it is suitable for adults and children.
Do I need to bring any foods to my testing consultation?
I have an extensive range of foods in my test kit including wheat and gluten, dairy products, beans and legumes, sugar, eggs, yeast, MSG and various others. You do not need to bring anything with you, although if you have something in particular in mind, just let me know beforehand.
How will I remember which foods I’m intolerant to?
A high-level report of your results is included, so you will be able to put your new knowledge into practice straight away. However, knowing the intolerances is only part of the picture – I also provide additional handouts on substitutes and foods to check, recipes, and general information. You will leave my clinic feeling confident that you have the information you need to be able to make changes. Are food intolerances forever?
That depends on the reason why you are intolerant. Take milk as an example: lactose intolerance may be due to a missing enzyme – if you don’t produce it now, you never will. It may be secondary to another issue such as gluten intolerance – in which case, this could improve with the right actions. Casein intolerance (the protein in milk) can be connected to problems with the gut (intestinal) wall. This is a completely different problem. This can be healed over time and then it is possible to eat/drink the food once more. Sometimes there may be other factors involved. It depends on the food and the person but significant improvements can often be made with good, nutritional interventions.
What do I do if I have a lot of food intolerances?
Firstly, don’t panic! I will guide you on the key things to eliminate from your diet as a starter – it certainly won’t be everything! When this happens, it is more indicative of your general state of health and I concentrate more on healing the cause, rather than removing every symptom.
